Dummy Chains
Got a question about dummy chains? You’ll find the most important answers here – and if not, just drop us a line.
What is a dummy chain?
A dummy chain consists of a cord, a clip and several beads – for example wooden beads, silicone beads, character beads, letter beads or crocheted beads. One end attaches to your baby’s dummy, while the other is clipped to their clothing. It’s also known regionally as a teether clip.
What’s a dummy chain for?
It stops the dummy constantly dropping – for instance in the car seat or pram – and keeps it within easy reach. A personalised dummy chain is also a lovely accessory and a popular baby gift.
How do I make my own dummy chain?
You’ll need a sturdy cord, a dummy clip and accessories – wooden beads in various sizes, silicone beads, crocheted animals and letter beads for a personalised dummy chain. You can find all the materials online at Kiki-Ena.
How long can a dummy chain be?
According to the standard DIN EN 12586, a maximum of 220 mm overall length – measured without the clip. Don’t exceed this length, so children aged 0–36 months can’t come to any harm.
How do I attach the dummy to the chain?
Thread the cord from below through the dummy’s ring, then slip the loop over the dummy and pull down firmly – done.
Where do I attach the dummy chain?
Typically with the clip to your child’s clothing or the pram. Keep it loose enough so your child can bring the dummy to their mouth themselves.
What age is a dummy chain suitable for?
For as long as your child needs a dummy – from newborn through to toddlerhood. Later, the chain can hold their favourite toy too.
When is a dummy chain safe?
When all components meet the EU toy standard EN 71-3:2019: sweat- and saliva-resistant, free from harmful substances, nickel, rust and solvents, with fast colours. For wooden and silicone clips, ventilation holes are essential. All materials at Kiki-Ena meet these requirements.
How do I clean a dummy chain?
Rinse under hot running water. For stubborn marks, use mild soap or washing-up liquid. Then dry thoroughly – either in the sun or on a radiator.
Teething Rings
Teething rings are often a baby’s first toy. Here you’ll find answers to the most important questions.
What are teething rings?
Teething rings are toys that are easy to grasp – even for small, unco-ordinated baby hands. They usually have a ring or half-ring and can be combined with plush or crocheted animals, wooden balls, wooden rings or beads. This gives a teething ring different textures to grip and feel.
What are teething rings for?
Teething rings keep small babies entertained and let them experience different materials, shapes and colours. They promote touch and motor skills. Depending on the design, they can be squeezed, shaken, rolled, grasped and even used as a soothing teether.
Can I make teething rings myself?
Yes, absolutely. Wooden rings or half-rings from the Kiki-Ena range serve as the base. Combined with small rings, wooden beads, bells and crocheted figures, you can create bespoke teething rings – even as a complete beginner.
When are teething rings safe?
When they’re made from harmless materials and comply with the European safety standard DIN EN 71-3. All craft materials at Kiki-Ena are sweat- and saliva-resistant and free from heavy metals, solvents and harmful substances.
What age are teething rings suitable for?
From birth onwards. In the first three months, soft teething rings are recommended – for example a wooden ring with a plush toy. After that, you can happily add wooden beads and figures. Many children play with them well into the crawling stage.
How do I clean teething rings?
Usually a damp cloth is enough. For heavier soiling, rinse briefly under running water and dry thoroughly. Teething rings with fabric or plush animals can often be machine washed too.
Baby Mobiles
A baby mobile can make daily life with a newborn easier and support development. Here are the most important answers.
What is a baby mobile?
A hanging, moving toy that’s set in motion by air currents, a gentle push or a motor. The figures attached to it – usually made of wood or plush – dance and fascinate babies.
What are baby mobiles for?
Above the changing table they distract your baby, above the cot they can help soothe them at bedtime, on the playpen they keep them entertained. In short: they entertain and calm.
What does a mobile help develop?
The gentle movements train focused observation and understanding. Additional light or music effects engage further senses. Your child’s attention is boosted.
Can a mobile lead to overstimulation?
Simple wooden or fabric mobiles usually don’t. Models with music and light effects should be used sparingly – for example only at changing time.
Are there portable baby mobiles?
Yes, many models are designed for on the go. Classic: the pram chain. For the car seat, spiral mobiles around the handle or trapeze styles with loops work well.
Can I make baby mobiles myself?
Yes, simple mobiles are easy to make yourself. You’ll find sturdy cord, wooden beads, wooden rings and wooden figures online at Kiki-Ena. Especially simple with our craft kits complete with instructions.
Where should I hang the baby mobile?
Classic locations: above the changing table, baby cot, bassinet or playpen. You can also hang it above the pram or car seat. Ideal: wherever your baby spends longer periods of time.
How do I attach the baby mobile?
Easiest with a hook in the ceiling, extended to the right height with cord if needed. Alternatively there are holders for attachment to changing table, bassinet or baby cot – no drilling required.
From what age can babies have a mobile?
Simple mobiles can be used from birth. By three months, almost all babies love the sight of them. From around four months, children start reaching for the hanging pieces themselves.
When are baby mobiles safe?
All materials must be saliva-resistant and colour-fast, and free from harmful substances. The cord must be sturdy so your baby can’t pull off small parts (choking and suffocation hazard).
Pram Chains
Pram chains are a must-have for babies who spend lots of time in the pram. Here you’ll find answers.
What is a pram chain?
A toy that attaches like a garland to the pram hood. Available in many designs made from fabric, wood or plastic. Mirror and crinkly cushion versions are also popular.
Why would I need a pram chain?
It entertains babies in the pram. Once your child is past just sleeping, their eyes and ears need stimulation. Sounds, figures and colours promote visual and auditory perception, cognitive development and motor skills.
Can I make a pram chain myself?
Yes – a bit more challenging than dummy chains, but certainly doable. You’ll need two clips, a cord and beads plus figures to thread on. You can find materials at Kiki-Ena. We recommend several hanging play strands with grasping rings or crocheted figures.
What age for a pram chain?
Chains with wooden or plastic figures larger than 3.2 cm should only be used from three months onwards, or positioned out of reach – newborns’ throats are delicate. Soft plush versions can be used from birth.
How do I attach the pram chain?
Simply clip the two dummy chain clips to the pram hood.
When is a pram chain safe?
As a toy, the EU toy directive applies. It must be free from toxic substances, sweat- and saliva-resistant. All craft materials at Kiki-Ena meet these requirements.
How do I clean a pram chain?
Wipe wooden or silicone chains with a damp cloth or rinse briefly, then dry thoroughly. Fabric versions can often be machine washed. Mixed designs should be carefully hand washed so wooden parts don’t swell.
