Magnetic sand? In the magnetic timer, iron filings cascade through the hourglass and gather centred on the wooden base in about 20 seconds — a fascinating natural spectacle. The magnet in the base brings the filings into an almost hair-like form, like a magnetic hedgehog costume.

How children play with it
The hourglass is flipped, the black filings cascade downwards and suddenly they start standing up, like spiky fur. Children watch mesmerised, tilt the timer on its side, tip it backwards — the filings follow the magnet into strange shapes. Time passing, magnetism and movement in one compact demonstration.
