How children use them
The child picks up the longest rod, carefully carries it to the floor and places it down. Next to it, the second longest – the 10 cm difference becomes visible and tangible. Rod by rod, the child arranges them in order, watches the staircase take shape and compares: is this one shorter than that one? From comparisons come sequences, from sequences comes number understanding. Mathematics with the whole body.
